The titles were placed in front of the teasers, and new commercial inserts in the middle the first and second acts of the show were also added (They also did some really weird stuff to the end titles, like putting Season 1's theme on half the Season 2 shows and Season 2's theme on the first handful of Season 3 eps. That was corrected when they show went to syndication, but the flopped titles/teasers remained in place until the early 1990s).Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6956070.post-1152898955634190222006-07-14T13:42:00.000-04:002006-07-14T13:42:00.000-04:00The Flying Nun originally opened with a teaser, bu...The Flying Nun originally opened with a teaser, but for some reason, on the season one DVDs, the teaser and the opening credits were flopped, so that the opening credits play first.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6956070.post-1152887366144432002006-07-14T10:29:00.000-04:002006-07-14T10:29:00.000-04:00My wife has gotten into reruns of "Everybody Loves...My wife has gotten into reruns of "Everybody Loves Raymond" which has two episodes back-to-back daily on (I think) TBS. What's funny is that the show starts "cold" (not sure if id did originally or they are just stripping the credits in the reruns) plus TBS is shows the end credits in a little bar at the bottom while running the next show above it. The result is that it often appears that you're watching a closing "bumper" scene that has nothing much to do with the previous episode ("Friends" did this) but in fact you are watching the next episode.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6956070.post-1152815938983315502006-07-13T14:38:00.000-04:002006-07-13T14:38:00.000-04:00For whatever reason, CBS shows in the 1960s were l...For whatever reason, CBS shows in the 1960s were less likely to have teasers than the sit-coms on ABC or NBC ("Green Acres" added teasers in its final -- and weakest season. It's one way when the show comes on TV Land to decide whether it's worth watching or not).

A good sitcom can actually use the teaser to set up the body of the show -- just going down a few posts in the blog, the final four seasons of "The Odd Couple" were great at using a 1-2 minute opening to set up the plot for the rest of the show. But too many shows nowadays seem to use the teaser the way "Cheers" did, as an almost-always unattached gag to the rest of the show.

Of course, considering how much of the show gets cut in syndication, this might not be a bad thing if the companies were smart enough to axe the unrelated teaser, start the show in syndication with credits and then keep the important part of the show intact.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6956070.post-1152815418680759472006-07-13T14:30:00.000-04:002006-07-13T14:30:00.000-04:00In the rising age of the DVR, it doesn't much matt...In the rising age of the DVR, it doesn't much matter how they structure shows (around commercials) as more people are watching recorded content thus creating a single continuous viewing experience (like many Brit-coms or watching shows on DVD). As a DVR user, I haven't really "sat through" a commercial in a couple of years now.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
