Samson Smythe is spewing some pretty shocking racism in that Malmgren-scripted, LeMoine-drawn sample.

Did Malmgren usually give all his females that inverted-V nose rather than the usual little curved wedge seen on most Archie comics females, or is that just a specific hallmark of the Josie title, irrespective of the particular artist?Peter Lynnhttp://manvsclown.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6956070.post-70214038603182518922010-11-07T09:22:43.623-05:002010-11-07T09:22:43.623-05:00This is the Malmgren clipping from Google Images t...This is the Malmgren clipping from Google Images that I based my connection on:

http://www.archiefans.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=8069&g2_serialNumber=3

To me, Lucy and DeCarlo are the gold standard of Archie artists, and almost anybody else could look sloppy in comparison.

By the way, you mention the more idiosyncratic Archie artists whose unique styles were 'grandfathered in' during the time of standardization. I've peaked at some digests in recent years, and noticed a couple of artists (of the new stories at the front and/or back) have been allowed to play with looser variations again. There was one in particular where the characters all looked like blockheads with triangular mouths.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6956070.post-19966292741371428762010-11-07T09:04:06.677-05:002010-11-07T09:04:06.677-05:00Wow, you could've fooled me-- I'm hardly a...Wow, you could've fooled me-- I'm hardly a connoisseur of later Archie artists, but these all look pretty much exactly like Dan DeCarlo to me. They must've gotten REALLY strict about it around this time.

I could swear I have a Jughead from around 1972 with cover art by Harry Lucey, not DeCarlo. I can't seem to find it at the moment though.Aaron Longhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14389783349170248351noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6956070.post-59858640611772153912010-11-06T20:25:16.829-04:002010-11-06T20:25:16.829-04:00No wonder Reggie and Me was never a hit -- I remem...No wonder Reggie and Me was never a hit -- I remember this story very distinctly, because as a kid it made me furious. Reggie's bullying here was so relentlessly cruel and sadistic --in 4 parts, yet! -- that the meager comeuppance never felt sufficient to me. Any one of the pranks, or outright acts of violence, that he perpetrated on Archie (or, mistakenly, Betty) outweighed the minor humiliation of being laughed at by a couple of nameless cops. I wanted him to be beaten to a pulp, or subjected to any of the tortures imagined by a frustrated Archie. Even now it sort of outrages me.Kennyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02125259992970822694noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6956070.post-41695005125642692072010-11-06T16:03:33.463-04:002010-11-06T16:03:33.463-04:00While he wasn't doing much finished art on ful...While he wasn't doing much finished art on full stories, Malmgren was drawing tons of gag pages for ARCHIE'S JOKE BOOK and MAD HOUSE GLADS by 1970ish, was't he? Or is that actually LeMoine? Those are admittedly the most worthy candidates for ignoring, of course. On my personal "want list", JOKE BOOK gets cut off about 10 years earlier than any of the other titles. In the case of MAD HOUSE, for whatever reason, I stick with it to the wretched end.Devlin Thompsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11358271733393938491noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6956070.post-55596129892570990242010-11-06T13:31:40.086-04:002010-11-06T13:31:40.086-04:00Just to make sure we're talking about the same...Just to make sure we're talking about the same people, here are examples:

- Dick Malmgren

- Gus LeMoine (from a script by Malmgren)

- and Chic Stone, who was a great inker (for Marvel and Archie and so on) but did a disappointing job when he took over the Archie pencilling from Lucey.

In Malmgren's case, he spent many years writing for Archie without drawing -- he probably wrote the first few issues of Josie and the Pussycats, which would make Valerie his unofficial co-creation (though she didn't actually get a personality until Doyle came back to the title). Finally he started drawing his own stories in the mid-'70s, but I have a feeling they wouldn't have used him if they had still had access to better artists, like Hartley (who had moved over to Christian comics by then).Jaime J. Growing up on the digests, his stuff always stuck out for me. Mostly for the noticeable lack of background detail and constantly shifting proportions of the characters' bodies/facial features. Was he really not very good, or did he just crank them out a little too quickly?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
